My New Bicycle–the Citizen Tokyo folding bike

I had been thinking for quite sometime about getting a bicycle. I live a block and a half away from a great grocery store in the neighborhood, but Utah suburb isn’t much of a ‘walking’ sort of place. Everything is so spread apart that transportation infrastructure has been mostly created for cars, not pedestrians or bikers. There is also a sense that it is unsafe to walk alone or walk along major roads since you could get hit by a car.

I decided to give it a try anyway. I live right behind a high school, and I see high school kids walking along these supposedly ‘unsafe’ roads all the time. The walk wasn’t so bad except, as expected, two cars honked at me and one car yelling out the window and whistling. I was royally annoyed.

I decided at that point that having a bicycle really might be a better way to travel to the grocery store rather than on foot.

I found this absolutely fabulous folding bike on sale on a Salt Lake City Craigslist post. The person who had sold it to me had purchased the bike a few months ago but had only taken it out once or twice. It was a GREAT deal. The folding/unfolding of the bike was ever so slightly tricky to learn at first but after a few times I got a hang of it very quickly.

Being a small bike, the feeling is a bit unstable until you get used to it, but turns corners quickly and efficiently, and I can see myself riding this bike everywhere. The bike is made by Citizen, and is called Tokyo–how fitting for me having been raised in Japan 🙂 It’s also like a sidekick for my car–like Batman’s motorcycle that shoots out of his batmobile. Here are a few more photos.

The bike is white and matches my BMW!!

hi Amber, thats so cool, your always been cool. I like bike myself, it’s just hard here where i live, going downhill is fun, but talk about going uphill, lets call for a pick-up.

Just a quick question I am looking at the same model bike the tokyo but I am 5’9 how tall are you it looked very small for you
    thanks

The seats and handle bars are adjustable (there is still room to extend both in the photo), so I don’t think you will have a problem. As you observed, the bike is very small and in my opinion is only meant for riding around in the city or around a neighborhood in a suburb. I am 5’8 and have immensely enjoyed riding the bike, hope it’s right for you!

Is your Citizen Tokyo folding still performing well? I was considering ordering that model.

Yes, actually it’s doing great! It’s a super small bike but awesome for just getting around town I would highly recommend it 🙂

How’d you get the white version? It looks awesome, but I can’t seem to find that color. Mind cluing me in?

I actually bought it off a local resident who had listed it on craigslist, so otherwise I’m not sure where to direct you. Good luck!

Any chance you have a picture of it in your BMW? I am wondering if I can fit two in my trunk.
    Thanks!

Unfortunately I do not – I ended up losing the bike in a move 😦 However, the bike will fit in any standard sized trunk of a sedan or a hatchback, the bike would fold down to the size of a – I’d say like a carry-on suitcase, if that makes sense. It’s pretty small. 🙂
